According to Chris Collibee, a spokesman for DEEP, the department was notified by the state police that the 80-pound untagged bear was hit around 7 p.m. on the westbound side of the roadway.
"Bears being struck by vehicles is extremely common with roughly 50 to 60 per year being hit," Collibee said.
State police said they did not have information on the number of people injured or damage to the vehicle, because the incident was not considered a crash, said Trooper Kelly Grant.
